How to use origami boxes to teach volume

Goal: To create origami boxes to enhance my students' understanding of volume

Start with 4 square pieces of paper of various sizes.

Fold each square horizontally.

Unfold the square and then fold vertically.

Then, fold the top to the middle.

Then fold the bottom to the middle.

Then, you will need to unfold these last two folds, and fold to the middle from the opposite direction.

Repeat all of the steps with each of your square pieces of paper to create nesting boxes.

Nesting boxes

Students can compare/contrast the amount of material needed to fill the different size boxes and create a graph to illustrate their findings.
